Announcement #3: Extra Credit Opportunities:

1. The film, 'Black Wave: the legacy of the Exxon Valdez' is on reserve at the LRC (across from the library).
After you have viewed it, email me for the list of questions to answer. This film will be on reserve the rest of the semester, but the exercise must be completed by Monday, Dec 8. (5 pts)

2. This extra credit assignment is ONLY for those students who were not able to attend the Sylvia Earle talk: Read the paper, Paddack et al. 2009. Submit a short summary (in the style of our periodical reports, but can be even more succinct).
This must be completed by Friday, Dec. 5. (5 pts)

Announcement #2:
We have an amazing opportunity to hear a talk from the most pioneering/ground breaking female marine biologist of our time - Sylvia Earle. She was one of the first people to conduct research from an underwater habitat, and was instrumental testing and using many deep submersibles. She was also the first female head of the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal governmental department that is in charge of monitoring and protecting our oceans.
She will be speaking on Monday, Oct 19 at UCSB Campbell Hall at 8pm. I have arranged special group price for us at $8 per person. I HIGHLY encourage you to come, you will be inspired! If you are interested, either tell me in class or email me no later than Thursday Oct 8. I will provide an opportunity for extra credit for this event.

Announcement #1:
If you missed, or would like to re-view the Plankton video from lecture 10/1 ("Ocean Drifters", National Geographic), it is on reserve at the Learning Resource Center (next door to the library - also a great place to get writing help!). You can watch it there.
If you missed that lecture, there is a worksheet that goes along with the video - get that either from me or from the Biology office (EBS 212). I will accept make-ups of this sheet only until 10/9.
