BMS107 Plus Hours Assignment - Biomedical Imaging and Visualization

Chapter 1 of your textbook includes a section on Medical Imaging Procedures (pp. 18-19).
This assignment is designed to further your knowledge of one or more biomedical imaging or visualization techniques of your choice.
The assignment may be broken down as follows:
  1. Select a biomedical imaging or visualization technique.
    • Imaging and visualization may be considered any technique that allows people to "see" anatomical structures or relationships that would not normally be visible with the naked eye. They are used in anatomical research and for clinical (diagnostic) purposes.
    • Imaging and visualization may occur at any level from molecular/cellular up to "whole body" visualizations such as those of the Visible Human Project. Medical imaging techniques such as endoscopy are allowable for purposes of this assignment.
    • The techniques shown in the textbook may serve as a starting point but you are not limited to them.
    • If the technique is shown on pp. 18-19 of the textbook, your report must extend to information not included on those pages, e.g., do not merely copy the information provided in the textbook.
  2. Write a brief (approx. 500-1,000 word) report on the technique you have chosen. Your report should include the following:
    • the full name or names of the technique as well as acronyms commonly used in reference to it
    • the physical basis of the technique ("how it works")
    • it's particular strengths, that is, what it allows us to see well ("what it's good for")
    • citation of a specific article or study in which the technique was used
    • at least one representative image provided by the technique you selected
    • a comparison to at least one other technique that is related in principle or purpose
  3. Reports may be submitted electronically (by e mail) or on "hard copy" (paper).
    • Electronic submissions including links to relevant web sites are highly encouraged.
    • In the subject line, please write "bms107p1," your first and last names, and the first letter of the day you attend lab (W, T, or S), for example, "bms107p1AndreasVesaliusW".
  4. Please save a copy of your report until credit for the assignment is posted (at course web site, after the due date).
